What Is Executive Coaching? Coach vs. Therapist vs. Mentor
It's early August, and every time I walk down the school supplies aisle at H.E.B. (that's the Texas grocery store, for my friends on the coasts), I want to buy all the pens, markers, and notebooks. What I wouldn't give to grab a stack of Lisa Frank folders and a matching pencil case with all the compartments (IYKYK). That post-Labor Day clean start feeling, a whole fresh year sitting right there in a three-ring binder.
We millennials don't get that feeling anymore. Not unless we build it ourselves.
So that's what this is.
I'm calling it Back to YOU Season. Four weeks, one series, one real question underneath all of it: what would it look like to start September differently this year? Not with a resolution. With an actual reset.
And this week, we're starting with the question I get asked more than almost any other, in some version of: What is executive coaching, and what does a coach actually do?
Coach vs Therapist vs Mentor: Let's Clear This Up
Here's the honest answer. Most people can't tell you the difference between a coach, a therapist, and a mentor, and the coaching industry hasn't done a great job clearing that up. So let's clear it up.
I was skeptical of all of this once, for what it's worth. I remember asking myself why I'd pay someone to ask me questions when I already had a therapist. Turns out those are two different rooms doing two different jobs, and I needed both at different points.
A therapist is like your doctor. They help you understand what happened in your past. A coach is more like your personal trainer, in the gym with you, holding you accountable to the work you already said you wanted to do. I don't diagnose your past. I help you build your future, one rep at a time.
A mentor has walked your exact path and hands you their answers. I don't do that. I ask the question that gets you to the answer you already have, sitting in you somewhere you haven't looked yet. From someone with zero stake in what you decide.
This is the part that changes everything. No agenda, no ego, just a mirror with really good questions.
What Coaching Is Actually About
This is the part I actually believe most. Coaching isn't about repairing something that's broken in you. It's about noticing what's been running your decisions without ever asking your permission. A limiting belief you inherited. A voice that isn't even yours. One real conversation can surface something you've never once considered, and that alone can shift the direction of everything that comes after it.
A fellow Substacker left a comment on one of my notes that I couldn't have said better myself: it's weekly, protected time that's just yours.
Here's what that looks like with me. Sixty minutes, on Google Meet, every week. Every session comes with a full transcript afterward, so nothing gets lost between weeks. You get direct text and email support from me Monday through Thursday.
And we track your shift with real data, not just a feeling. We use the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment, a real energy-leadership tool, not a personality quiz, once at the start and once near the end, so you can actually see how you've changed.
We work across three things at once:
1. Energy plus mindset. Because you can't build a new life from the same depleted state that got you stuck.
2. Vision. Because most people haven't let themselves picture their "good ending" clearly enough to actually walk toward it.
3. Strategy. Because insight without a plan is just a nice conversation. Accountability is what makes it real.
