My Journey to Becoming a Coach: From Corporate to Calling
For years, I was a self-help wellness girl who, to be honest, secretly judged the coaching profession. I’d read all the books, listened to all the podcasts, and even dragged my best friend to Gabby Bernstein's talks in NYC. But the idea of becoming a coach myself? That was a secret I never dared to attempt.
My self-talk was a constant stream of limiting beliefs: "Why would anyone hire me?" "Coaching is a scam." "I could never make enough money." This was the internal narrative of a successful corporate professional who, beneath the surface, was grappling with imposter syndrome and the fear of what others would think.
Then, my world shifted. When I became a mother, my old systems for organization and efficiency simply broke. I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to be my pre-baby self, but that woman was gone. The coping mechanisms I had perfected over a lifetime were shattered, and I was left questioning everything. This breakdown, however, proved to be a profound catalyst.
The Research-Driven Path to My New Career
As I navigated this intense period of self-discovery, I started to listen to my inner voice. It was telling me to pursue that "secret thing" I had always dreamed about. So, I did what I do best: I started a spreadsheet and began researching executive coaching programs.
With ChatGPT as my analyst, I meticulously compared over 10 different programs, asking myself key questions:
- What is coaching vs. therapy, really?
- How important is ICF certification?
- What approach and type of coaching do I want to specialize in?
Through this process, I gained an entirely newfound respect for the coaching profession. It wasn’t a scam or a cringy side hustle; it was a path that aligned with who I am and the gifts I have on a deeper level.
The Simple Truth About My Coaching Journey
When I started telling people I was thinking about becoming a coach, their response was almost always, "Of course, you should be doing this; you'll be amazing at it." It was as if everyone else around me saw it, except for me. The truth is, I knew it too. I just wasn't still long enough to listen to my inner voice.
The answers that followed helped me realize the "why" behind it all:
Coaching is future-focused: It’s for individuals who are ready to take action and move forward.
A coach is a personal trainer for your mind: I use my strategic expertise to help you build a clear, actionable roadmap.
ICF certification is a commitment: Pursuing this credential is a sign of my dedication to the profession's highest ethical standards.
I finally chose a program that was in-person in Austin and started the journey in July. I expect to be fully accredited with my ICF by early spring 2026.
